In collaboration with the travel agency “The Travel Tribe” we have prepared a trip of a lifetime! Get ready to experience an unforgettable adventure as we will combine trekking & kayaking experiences, visits to local tribes in the jungle, wildlife safaris, relaxing in hot springs, and swimming on the exotic beaches of Zanzibar. The detailed itinerary of the tour can be seen below:
Day 1 – 22/10/24: Athens – Kilimanjaro
We will depart from Eleftherios Venizelos airport late in the evening on 21/10/24 and board the flight to Tanzania via a stopover. We will arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport at noon and transfer to our accommodation lodge. Settle into the rooms and relax. Overnight stay.
Day 2 – 10/23/24: Trekking to Kilimanjaro (Marangu Route)
A magical day on Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route (16km approximately 6 hours trekking round trip)! After breakfast at the hotel, our adventure starts around 7 am towards the Marangu gate. The 45km from our hotel will be filled with anticipation as we approach the start of our trek. Marangu is expected to provide us with a day full of challenges and beautiful views. Our trek takes us through a dense rainforest, where thick branches and bright green foliage create a magical landscape.
It is the start of an unforgettable experience, with the hope of seeing black and white Colobus monkeys playing in the branches. As we reach Mandara Refuge at 2720 meters, our steps lead us to the Maundi Crater nearby with spectacular views of the peaks of Kilimanjaro. There, we can take in the stunning views of Kibo and Mawezi, as well as catch a glimpse of the Kenyan side of the Chala and Jipe lakes. It’s a day full of experiences and natural beauty that will leave us refreshed and excited for our next adventures on Kilimanjaro! Return to the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 – 24/10/24: Materuni Falls, Coffee Tour, visit to Masai village & Kikuletwa hot springs.
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Tanzania’s nature, on an excursion that will take you from the stunning Materuni Falls to the ultimate relaxation at Kikuletwa Hot Springs with a stopover for coffee tasting and a visit to a Masai tribal village. The adventure starts from Materuni village, where you will discover the secret beauties of the waterfalls.
After a short hike through the lush green forest, you will arrive at the wondrous sight of the waterfalls, where the waters fall with stormy force in a natural haven of tranquility and beauty. From there, the journey continues with an authentic coffee experience. We will visit one of the region’s coffee plantations, where we will learn the secrets of growing and processing coffee from harvesting to the preparation of this fragrant beverage.
We will then visit a traditional village of the Masai tribe, a tribe that has lived in harmony with nature for centuries, where we will have the opportunity to delve into their way of life and traditions. We will be welcomed with joy and kindness, showing us their traditional clay houses, as well as their impressive jewelry and clothing with their characteristic bright colors. They will introduce us to their hunting techniques and invite us to participate in traditional dances and songs. The trip ends with a visit to the Kikuletwa hot springs, a paradise of peace and relaxation. At these hot springs, you can relax your muscles as you enjoy the idyllic scenery. Return to the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4 – 25/10/24: Trekking & Kayaking in Lake Chala – transfer to Arusha
Breakfast at the lodge and depart for the ultimate adventure on Lake Chala. Our tour combines trekking (less than 2 hours round trip) and kayaking to discover the stunning beauty of this magical landscape. Starting with trekking, we walk through the stunning scenery of Lake Chala, navigate steep inclines, and enjoy the incredible views of the surrounding mountains and the blue waters of the lake.
After enjoying the hike, we move on to kayaking for another exhilarating experience. By kayaking, we will almost reach the center of the lake where we will once again admire the stunning beauty of the rocks and the peaceful atmosphere of the crystal clear waters. This tour to Lake Chala combines natural beauty with adventure, creating an unforgettable experience that will stay with us forever. Transfer to Arusha, the ‘capital’ of safari since this is where all those who travel inland escape from to enjoy the thrill of observing wildlife in their natural habitat. Check-in at the lodge Dinner and overnight.
Day 5 – 10/26/24: Safari in Ngorongoro National Park – flight to Stone Town/Zanzibar
Breakfast at the lodge and depart for Ngorongoro National Park, which is part of the Serengeti. The park’s fauna has the unique privilege of being home to the four largest herbivores on the planet at the same time: elephants, hippos, buffalo, and rhinos. In its grasslands, various mammals breed in large numbers such as zebras, gazelles, and antelopes, satisfying the appetites of lions and other felines. Packs of hyenas, baboons, ostriches, and countless birds of all colors live there.
The huge volcanic crater of East Africa’s most primeval country is where hundreds of thousands of animals migrate to find food. A multitude of feline reptiles and birds give us unforgettable moments during the safari, while the African landscape completes the scenery that is sure to be unforgettable. Stop for lunch and then transfer to Arusha/Kilimanjaro airport for the flight to Zanzibar. Arrival and transfer to hotel accommodation. Overnight stay.
Day 6 – 27/10/24: Stone Town Tour
Breakfast at the hotel and depart for the guided tour of Stone Town, the historic town that has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Its name may not be romantic at all (the Stone Town), but it is the oldest town and the heart of Zanzibar, which has changed little in the last 200 years. It is a city of small streets, bustling bazaars, mosques, and elaborately decorated Arab houses. You will need to spend many hours wandering through these charming narrow streets that evoke memories of the past.
Most of the houses you will see were built in the 19th century with the island’s coral rocks as the basic material, but they were not resistant to time. The government made sure that many of them were renovated, preserving their original form and charm. We will visit the town market which is an attraction in itself. It is a bustling and colorful place where every vendor is hawking his wares under the hot sun. We will visit the Sultan Palace which was built in 1890 to accommodate the Sultan’s family and became the official residence of the Sultan in 1911. After the 1964 revolution, it was renamed People’s Palace and turned into a museum. We will then head to the House of Wonders. It is a fairly large building surrounded by columns and balconies, with a large clock on top. It was built in 1883 as the Sultan’s ceremonial palace and was the first in Zanzibar to have electricity and a lift, so it was rightly called the House of Wonders by the locals of the time.
Among the sights to admire for their local architecture are: The old German Consulate, the Africa House (former English Club), the Kele Kele Square, the old City Fortress and of course, we will not miss visiting the stool market, where one of the darkest stories of humanity was written about the buying and selling of black slaves loaded onto slave ships to be resold to America and Brazil as slaves on the plantations of the white colonialists. We will see the home of Dr Livingstone, an iconic Scottish missionary of the Victorian era, a physician and explorer of Africa. Considered one of the most important European explorers and the first European to cross equatorial Africa from the Atlantic to the Indian, he also explored the Zambezi River valley, discovered Victoria Falls, and devoted much of his life to the discovery of the sources of the Nile.
His discoveries preceded the partition of Africa by the great European powers. Free time for personal exploration of the city. Return to the hotel. The rest of the day at leisure to explore the city, do some shopping, wander the narrow streets of the old town, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail on the roof garden of a hotel overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Overnight
Day 7 – 10/28/24: Stone Town – free day – optional excursion to Prison Island & Nakupeda sandbar
Breakfast at the hotel. Today is at leisure to discover the town. Alternatively, we recommend an optional excursion to Prison Island and Nakupeda Sandbar (cost 85 USD per person). It is a short distance island that we will reach by speedboat from Stone Town which is euphemistically called Prison Island.
The building built on the island to house prisoners never functioned as a prison but rather as a quarantine building in which one had to stay for 15 days to be assured that one was not suffering from any contagious-deadly disease before being allowed to enter the island of Zanzibar. There is now, in addition to the quarantine prison building, a hotel under construction on the island and a sanctuary for the giant tortoise Aldabra. Immediately afterwards we will sail to the Nakupeda sandbar, a strip of sand in the Indian Ocean where we will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy our swim as well as taste fine seafood delicacies at lunch.
Alternatively, we can visit the CR Hope Foundation, the school founded by Renos Fountoulakis and located in the village of Kizimkazi. We can arrange a visit to the school (if it is open when we visit) and ask them to send us their needs for stationery, etc. so that anyone who wants to can buy the necessary items from Athens and we can all take them to the children of the school together. Here there will only be a charge for transportation to/from the school (which depends on the total participation).
Return to Stone Town and free time. Overnight.
8th day – 29/10/24: Stone Town – transfer to beach hotel
Breakfast at the hotel and at the scheduled time transfer to the beach hotel of your stay. Arrival, check-in, and for the next 4 days the sugary sandy beach and turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean invite you to enjoy them to the fullest. Your stay includes an evening meal.
9th & 10th day – 30 & 31/10/24: Beach Stay
The days are free to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and the facilities of your hotel, relax, positively recharge your body and mind and if you wish, join one of the optional excursions we have to offer such as Safari Blue (85 USD per person). Your day’s stay at the hotel includes breakfast and dinner in addition to breakfast.
Day 11 – 01/11/24: Beach Hotel – Zanzibar Airport
Breakfast at the hotel and free time to enjoy the exotic beach one last time until noon. At the scheduled time, we will depart from the hotel for our transfer to the city airport. Board the flight back to Athens via a stopover.
